Actually, independent thought or original information is welcome to
anyone with a brain, as long as the author shows his/her work such that
it can be verified and reproduced by others. You don't need a ton of
references to the work (and conclusions) of others if you do a complete
job yourself.
There is a reason for the joke publication _The Journal of
Irreproducible Results_, started in 1955. So many "scientific"
publications have this little tiny problem: no one can duplicate the work.
