You don't do one or the other, you do both.  For instance, at the location
where I am right now, we've got an 18kva generator that's fed by both
utility-supplied natural gas, and bottled propane, and the bottle has a
three-day reserve and a 12-hour "guaranteed" (yes, yes, I know, for
whatever that's worth) refill contract with the local Chevron refinery's
truck-delivery service.

I think that's a reasonably typical setup, although a lot of folks don't
have a refinery locally, and use a regular rural propane service.
