RE: [datacenter] Generators
Mark,
Depending on how big of a generator you get, some UPS's are not as generator
friendly and you need to size the generator appropriately. UPS's can have
problems with generators. Generator's typically have a slow response time
to load changes. This can cause some UPS's to go to battery even while on
generator. Generator's fueled from Natural Gas or Propane respond slower
than generators ran from diesel (this can cause you to need a larger
generator when powered form propane). Diesel Generators have the problem
with fuel storage and spill containment. I prefer the below solution since
you always have a backup in case of the Natural Gas getting shut off (even
if you have to go one size larger on the generator).

You don't do one or the other, you do both. For instance, at the location
where I am right now, we've got an 18kva generator that's fed by both
utility-supplied natural gas, and bottled propane, and the bottle has a
three-day reserve and a 12-hour "guaranteed" (yes, yes, I know, for
whatever that's worth) refill contract with the local Chevron refinery's
truck-delivery service.
I think that's a reasonably typical setup, although a lot of folks don't
have a refinery locally, and use a regular rural propane service.
