The only times I can say that I've seen depmod fail is when it's an
incorrect version in relation to the kernel that you're running, or
not configured.  On recent versions of Slackware (10.0 and above),
everything comes prepped for end-series 2.4 and 2.6 kernels, and works
"out of the box" for every kernel version that I've tried up to
2.6.11.something-or-another.
