I think one should use strong (and therefore toxic and dangerous - 30%
solution) peroxide in order not to dilute the gum too much. But thinking
over, you can use dry dichromate to compensate for it (I wouldn't; I
fear of dry dichromate)...

Have you ever tried Peroxide? I checked this in one of my formulary
books and have used it to stop spoilage in paper clay and perhaps it
would work with Gum and it is not poisonous.
