One other thing I wanted to add.  The only way into your system without
logging in is to boot to run level 1.

John Trostel also supplied a good suggestion: boot off a rescue CD and
mount the file system.

BTW, you won't be able to login if the connection to the internet is
down.  login hangs forever.
